Hakkai had been willing to brush aside the questions Avalon had been throwing at him on his return: after all, they had been hurtful, but it had seemed more like a clumsy curiosity than malice.

And none of it had been anything more than he'd said to himself a thousand times over. The wounds had been almost mortal; the scars were thick.

But Avalon has been stalking him for days now, their cool gaze on him raising the hairs on the back of his neck. They haven't approached yet.

He's out of patience.

He knocks sharply on Avalon's door, face a neutral mask.

Avalon opens the door, not surprised to see Hakkai standing there. “Can I help you?”

"The question, I think, is whether I can help you," Hakkai murmurs, and inclines his head in a polite little bow. "I've noticed you have been taking quite an interest in me lately. Why?"

So. You, uh, stabbed someone. You couldn't have just asked him if he wasn't corporeal?

Yes, I did. And I could have. It makes no difference to me.

It makes a hell of a difference to him. I think you scared him, even if he didn't get hurt.

Also, please give me the knife.

You and I are permanent, it looks like.

It seems we are. How much do you know? [If he read their file. They think he would have done so already.]

[ She does approach them, eventually, after at least a day or two of stalking. Smiling as she usually does, Root strolls up to them, leaning in a little so it's very obvious she's there. No stalking; just outright being annoying. ]

How are you doing, Avalon? Seems like it's been a pretty average day for you.

[Avalon is on their way back from the dining hall when Root approaches them. They stop, standing off to the side of the hallway, close to the wall. They face her, their expression flat and calm.] You would know. I thought you had no interest in me, but I must have been wrong.

Avalon. Nice to meet you. [They mean it, but their tone and expression are emotionless.] What is it? [They would know if someone had been harmed, so they assume that she knows Gortash, and either she needs something or he does.]
